Last week, David and I journeyed to the Sonoran Desert, the land of saguaro cacti and the beautiful Gold Canyon United Methodist Church, to present our organ and multimedia concert experience, Bach and Sons. The unique southwest scenery and contemporary church were a stunning backdrop for the telling of the timeless story of Johann Sebastian Bach and his family, a fitting celebration of Bach’s 334th birthday. I had the joy to play the incomparable organ music of Johann and that of his sons and to tell the story of the Bach family from the perspective of the women of the Bach family, the wives — Maria Barbara and Anna Magdelena, the daughter — Katharina Dorothea, and the patron — Sara Levy.
David tied everything together with his stunning visuals taking the audience to Bach’s Germany as well as live-action camera projections of my performance all projected to a cinematic-sized screen.
The wonderfully appreciative audience came to know Johann Sebastian Bach as more than a musician, but as a man as well.
